GAROWE, SOMALIA — October 10, 2026: Somalia has entered the 2026 Deyr rainy season, one of the country's most important periods for agriculture, livestock production, and water replenishment.

The Deyr rains typically occur between October and December, providing much-needed moisture for crop cultivation, pasture regeneration, and water sources across the country.

According to the Somali Meteorological Agency's seasonal outlook, rainfall is expected to become established between late September and October, although the timing varies between locations. The forecast indicates wetter-than-normal conditions across much of Somalia.

Farmers and pastoralists welcome the rainy season

The arrival of the Deyr season brings renewed expectations for agricultural recovery, particularly among communities that depend on rain-fed farming and livestock production.

In southern and central Somalia, farmers are preparing agricultural land and planting seasonal crops, while pastoralists across Puntland and other regions are looking forward to improved grazing conditions and water availability.

If rainfall is well distributed, the season could help restore pasture, improve soil moisture, and support agricultural production after previous periods of drought.

Heavy rainfall expected in several regions

Despite the potential benefits, meteorological agencies are warning communities to prepare for unusually heavy rainfall.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported that strengthening El Niño conditions could increase the risk of significant flooding during the 2026 Deyr season.

According to the seasonal outlook, some areas of central and southern Somalia have a 90% probability of receiving above-normal rainfall. This is a rainfall forecast, not a prediction that flooding will occur everywhere.

In Puntland, the Information Management Centre for Water and Land Resources has also forecast above-normal rainfall in several areas, including Garowe, Galkayo, and Qardho.

Agricultural communities urged to prepare

Agricultural experts emphasize the importance of preparing farms and livestock before periods of heavy rainfall.

Farmers are encouraged to clear drainage channels, protect stored seeds and agricultural inputs, and monitor local weather forecasts before planting.

Livestock owners should identify safe grazing areas, ensure access to clean drinking water, and seek veterinary advice on disease prevention during wet conditions.

Communities living near rivers and flood-prone areas are particularly encouraged to follow official weather alerts and emergency instructions.

Ugub Agrovet encourages agricultural preparedness

Ugub Agrovet, an agricultural and veterinary supplies company based in Garowe, Puntland, encourages farmers and livestock owners across Somalia to use the rainy season as an opportunity to strengthen agricultural productivity while taking precautions against possible flooding.

The company emphasizes the importance of suitable seeds, reliable farming tools, animal health products, and practical agricultural knowledge in supporting resilient livelihoods.

As the Deyr season progresses, farmers and pastoralists are encouraged to stay informed, prepare early, and protect their crops and livestock.
